Health and Safety

1. 1 Outline the health and safety policies and procedures of the work setting. To protect children and adults in any setting there are a number of legal and regulatory requirements that one must follow. All early years settings have to comply with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation stage that was introduced in 2008 and every aspect of the welfare of children in all early years settings are covered, including:- safeguarding suitable people suitable premises and equipment rganisation documentation. In addition to the Early Years framework, health and safety legislation sets out legal requirements to keep not only children but people who work with children, be it, nursery workers, childminders and nannies safe in different situations in different settings. As a Nanny working in the home of the children I care for I have talked with the children’s parents about what Health and Safety policies and procedures should be followed in their home .

It was agreed that at all times the house should be kept clean and tidy, all of the play equipment should be safe and in good working order and where appropriate conform to British standards. As I started working with the family when the youngest of the children was not walking we have ensured that safety gates, where needed, are put up so to avoid any accidents as he becomes more mobile. We will all be responsible for the health and safety of not only the children but myself. I will ensure that all rooms, outdoor areas and equipment are checked at the start of my day and at the end of the day.

Should there be any breakages and accidents during my time with the children I will be responsible for recording these and reporting them to the parents when they take over at the end of each day, should I find that any equipment is broken or damaged I will not use the equipment as it could harm both myself and the children. 1. 2 Identify the lines of responsibilty and reporting for health and safety in the work setting. The overall responsibility At the beginning of the child minding relationship Agree with the parents as to what to do when a child needs emergency medical treatment and record this in the child record documents.

Gain emergency contact details for the parents and any other suitable adults and record the details in the child record documents. Minimising the likelihood of an accident in the home A risk assessment will be carried out and reviewed at least annually. The risk assessment will identify aspects of the environment which need to be checked on a regular basis – a record of these particular aspects will be maintained and a written record of when and by whom they have been checked will be kept. Reasonable steps will be taken to minimise identified risks.

In the event of an incident I will follow any set procedures given to me by the parent if it is known that an incident could take place (for example a child having a fit or going into anaphylactic shock due to an allergy). If still not resolved and the incident is minor I will call the parents or another emergency contact for further guidance. If I am unable to contact the parents or any other emergency contact I will contact NHS direct and follow their advice. If suitable I will use items from my first aid box.

If the incident is serious I will call an ambulance. If I am caring for other children at the same time I will look to provide approved care for them or contact their parents for early collection. I will record all the information on the incident in the Accident/Incident record form. In the case of a serious incident, such as one that required a stay in hospital, I will inform my insurer. In the event of a minor accident I will attempt to make the environment safe for all the children I am caring for.

I will use items from my first aid box and my knowledge of first aid to make the child better, limit the injury or limit the potential for the injury to increase. I will call the parent if I feel they need to know prior to collection. At collection I will tell the parent the details of the accident. I will fill in the Accident/Incident record form. In the event of a major accident I will attempt to make the environment safe for all the children I am caring for.

I will follow the agreement made with the parents on what to do if the child emergency medical treatment which will be noted in the child’s record. If suitable I will call the parents or another emergency contact for further guidance. If I am not confident that the child will be okay I will call an ambulance. If I am caring for other children at the same time I will look to provide approved care for them or contact their parents for early collection. I will record all the information on the incident in the Accident/Incident record form. | |
