The state does not put up stop signs for no reason, they intend for them to help people be cautious while driving. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers. (http://www. rmiia. org/Auto/Teens/Teen_Driving_Statistics. htm) Now being a teenager and having a ticket, reguarding speeding, running a stop sign or anything at that matter has made me realize how selfish I was to the fact that I was putting my life as well as others on the line.

To you running a stop sign might not be a big deal, but to someone who has had a family member die because of an irresponsible person failing to stop and hitting their car, is a huge thing to them. On Monday, January 28, 2008 in St. Luis a man by the name of Ramon Baez, a 67-year-old Morro Bay resident failed to come to a stop at a stop sign. This failure to stop resulted in the three car accident Monday afternoon according to reports, sending two people to the hospital and one person pronounced dead.

Now ask yourself a question, could this tragic accident have been provented if this man had stopped at this stop sign? The answer is YES! The lives of the two injured people will forever be changed and the hearts of all the family members of the person that was not so fortunate to get out of the crash alive will forever have a missing piece. Now ask yourself another question, has your views on running a stop sign changed?

I would hope that it has, after hearing that story put yourself in their shoes. Maybe you are running late for work and there is a stop sign that you feel you do not need to stop at, is it worth getting your boss mad at you, rather than killing an innocent person? Stop signs are much more important than people see them to be, but getting a ticket or hurting somebody over being irresponsible at a stop sign is simply ridiculous. Taking the time to follow the rules is worth being safe.

I think that getting a ticket might have been good for me, so that I could realize the possible consequences of my actions. I refuse to hold the lives of other people in danger in my hands, I will be more cautious and responsible when getting behind the wheel of a car. And when I see that big red sign that says STOP, that’s exactly what I’ll do. Being on the internet and taking the time to read a few stories over the horrible accidents due to stop signs has made me realize how important they really are, and the purpose of obeying them.
