BCM is a concerted ministry of the churches of local associations and the Alabama Baptist State Convention. ( Baptist campus Ministries: Jacksonville State University BCM, 2007 ) . The BCM provides a topographic point for the pupils of JSU to come learn about and worship God.

The History of JSU BCM: From the Beginning

From 1920 to 1923, John Caylor was adjunct curate of the First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa. One of his ministry countries was remaining in touch with the pupils at The University of Alabama. During the latter portion of the 1920-21 school twelvemonth, Caylor set up a Baptist Christian Council on the campus of The University. When he learned from Frank Leavell in 1921 his organisation at The University was about the same as an organisation in Texas called Baptist Student Union, the Baptist Christian Council was changed to Baptist Student Union, believed to be the first such organisation E of the Mississippi River. Most current convention-employed campus curates are ordained curates, and some have had pastoral experience. ( Baptist Campus Ministries: Information – Campus Ministries Department, 1991 ) . ( My Church Supports Baptist Campus Ministries: And I Want to State You Why, 2000 ) . We see the BCM as an extension of the ministry and mission of our local church. These are our immature people. The BCM provides a place off from place, a religious family for pupils who know or who are seeking to cognize Christ. At a clip when many immature people are doing determinations that will find the class of their lives the BCM provides a strong voice shouting out in the wilderness of secular academe. ( My Church Supports Baptist Campus Ministries: And I Want to State You Why, 2000 ) .

Baptist Campus Ministry: Our Vision

If a campus ministry is to hold an impact on a campus, its pupils must state and ask for other pupils. It must go portion of the cloth of that group. Two things develop this kind of vision for their campus among pupils. First, it is the function theoretical account they see provided by their pupil curate and the 2nd s their apprehension of God and their seeing the campus as an extension of His work. A collegial ministry can make a batch of good things and still non hold an ambiance of Christian growing. It is this sort of ambiance that pupils begin to alter and turn. When that happens pupils get down to be concerned about others and are more willing to be portion of a scheme that reaches out to all 5,000 or 15,000 pupils on their campus alternatively of merely holding a good clip with “ our group. ” ( The Ten Commandments of Collegiate Ministry: The Vision, 1997 ) .

Campus Ministry Percepts

It is profoundly interested in making and ministering to those who have exhausted all other possibilities ; but if they are all it reaches, it has failed merely every bit clearly as those ministries which are for “ pretty people ” merely. Perception is non about seting out false image or enticing merely the campus All-Americans. Percept is the message your campus is having about your ministry. The message pupils are having has an overpowering consequence on the possibility of your ministry stretch and affecting them. There are four factors that can do up the perceptual experience on your campus. They are:

Promotion

Particular Events

Awareness/Visibility

Grapevine

As a consequence of any combination of these four factors your ministry may be perceived right, falsely, ill, or as being better than it truly is, worse than any of these picks is that there is no perceptual experience whatsoever about your ministry. ( The Ten Commandments of Collegiate Ministry: The Perception of your Ministry, 1997 ) .

Reaching Out

A conjunct attempt is being made to make Internationals. The Convention ‘s 1991-1995 strategic planning subject is Mission 2000 with accent on making people, developing trusters and beef uping missions. Campus curates are the steering force in implementing the Convention plan of work on college and university campuses. They are committed to the rudimentss of making pupils, developing pupil trusters, and taking pupils in missions and ministries as indispensable dimensions of the Gospel – all of which campus ministries has been about for 70 old ages in Alabama. ( Baptist Campus Ministries: Information – Campus Ministries Department, 1991 ) .

Meeting Up and Being Active

Most BSU/BCM groups have some set meeting topographic point on their campus, although some have separate belongings on or near campus that is easy accessible to all pupils. Besides hosting events they sponsor themselves, these organisations are known to host campus- and student-led events as a portion of their outreach including bible surveies, retreats and mission trips. ( Baptist Collegiate Ministries: Serving History, 2010 ) . Because BCM is unfastened to everyone, we enjoy a monolithic assortment of pupils from all walks of life. That means, no affair who you are, or what you ‘re into, there ‘s a topographic point for you to stop up in at the BCM. As a campus ministry, BCM strives to be one of the most active groups at JSU. Because of our centralised location in the bosom of campus, BCM has direct contact with what ‘s go oning on campus – from our battercake breakfast, to intramural athleticss squads, to homecoming, and more.
