While many people may have forgotten about the importance of protecting and maintaining Earth, there exists a series of organizations whose main purpose is to protect all natural aspects of the planet we call home. One of the major and oldest organizations is Greenpeace.

The main goal of Greenpeace, as explained by the organization, is “to expose environmental criminals, and to challenge government and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate”. One of the Greenpeace environmental focuses is to protect the ocean, beaches, and waves. They set up clear objectives and are serious about attaining their goals. The nonprofit organization Greenpeace deserves our support because they perform an important role in campaigns by exposing and defending environmental issues such as deforestation and protecting our oceans all over the world.
Greenpeace is an organization that fights to save all aspects of nature. As explained on their website, it is a non-profit organization that works to discontinue environmental degradation. According to Greenpeace, the organization began in 1971 when a group of peaceful environmental activists sailed into Alaska by boat to protest with intent to stop a series of underground nuclear tests that were being done by the United States government. Some of the main Greenpeace campaigns include stopping climate change, protecting tropical rainforests, eliminating toxic chemicals, and stopping the nuclear threat (Greenpeace).
They are considered to be a radical activist group by many because of the level of protesting that they undertake. These actions include the famous 1971 boat trip to Alaska. They lead many protests that go straight to the root of the problem, sometimes even putting their lives in danger. Nowadays, Greenpeace focuses more on the marine perspective of the environment. Their main goals revolve around maintaining clean and safe beaches as well as oceans. One way in which they promote their cause is by having public beach cleanups to keep the beaches free from pollution.
They fight government plans that could possibly pollute beaches or destroy the environment in any way. Their positive approach to protecting beaches has respectively given them an honorable reputation. The organization represents the cause for environmental protection in a positive manner. For instance, they deeply explain the problems that they wish to correct in an effective manner that strays away from just mocking their foes (in most cases the government). They want people to take action, but not in a violent manner.
The Greenpeace non-profit organization gives a detailed description of events and issues that are currently being considered and problems that were of concern in the past. It makes a high note of its many victories in the fights the organization has undertaken. Some of the achievements they note; for instance, are a ban on nuclear weapons testing, dumping radioactive and industrial waste at sea, and a moratorium on commercial whaling. The organization tries to seek help from all people who are concerned with the environment and its future.
It also tries to promote environmental awareness for those who may not consider the actual importance of the environment as a whole. Since one of the organization’s main purposes is to prevent the government from making irrational decisions concerning the environment, it tries to teach people to rally in favor of the environment to protect it. The color green is embroidered throughout the world, showing the play on words that represents the environment. They are very clear to note the laws in place they are against or the decisions that are being made or not made in favor of the environment.
Greenpeace is also very clear and elaborates on its objectives and goals in a precise manner. It is easy to operate since all the information is laid out right when you enter the website. Greenpeace’s vision is that the researching new solutions and alternate approaches will lead to a green and peaceful future. Specifically, they want to protect the oceans, ancient forests, get rid of fossil fuels and work towards complete reliance on natural resources and their protection. Their hope is that every person who enjoys the beach or the ocean will take part in the cause to help save it from destruction or degradation.
There are places on the website that gives everyone an opportunity to become a member of the organization or donate to the cause. Greenpeace website exhibits the three appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos a theory proved by our Ancient philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Aristotle said that we persuade others by three means: (1) by the appeal to their reason (logos); (2) by the appeal to their emotions (pathos); and (3) by the appeal of our personality or character (ethos). The most outwardly noticeable appeal is the pathos, or emotion, shown on the Greenpeace.
Much emotion is put into these causes which is why they are able to achieve so many of their goals and can still strive to complete more of them. The sites also use logos in the ways they explain their mission statement and how they can and will carry out their goals. Additionally, with the heavy researches done by Greenpeace with the issues that are concerned with, there is a great presence of ethos. The information and studies are very accurate and therefore the website is able to establish its credibility. Due to the fact that I am a beach resident this issue touches on me greatly.
Having grown up around the ocean, I understand the excitement and leisure it can bring. When I began to surf, my respect and love for the ocean grew even greater with time because of the devotion I had to the sport. I could not even begin to measure what would happen if the beaches and waves were not there for me to enjoy. Because I want to keep the beaches in good condition, I have always tried to take an active part myself in maintaining the beaches. One way in which I have helped to preserve the beach has been through beach cleanups. These cleanups rid the beaches of garbage that could potentially enter the water and pollute it.
Such beach cleanups have been undertaken personally on my own and through organizations such as Surf rider Foundation which is an outside source and supporting Greenpeace. Personally, hope comes from seeing one individual change their stance or approach. When people take a genuine interest and change in their lives, it gives hope for the larger battle. I learnt a lot about Greenpeace the organization. I had preconceived notions that they were political activists and largely connected with the new age movement. I grew a new found respect for them and their movement.
I greatly agree with the ideas of being independent of government and company founding, being a non-profit organization, and their non-violent confrontational manner. I can draw many parallels between them and the Vatican church. I did not realize how organized and influential they actually were. It seems that the organization gets a bad rap from certain radicals and we unfairly associate them with Greenpeace. Their methods and emphasis promote peace and concern for all people. Furthermore, Greenpeace stands for positive change through action. They defend the natural world and promote peace.
Their goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity by organizing public campaigns for the protection of oceans and ancient forests. Greenpeace neither seeks nor accepts donations which could compromise their independence, aims, objectives or integrity. Greenpeace relies on us (individual supporters, and on grant-support from foundations. ) by joining and supporting their campaigns. It is not only Greenpeace that we help; we are all committed to the principles of non-violence, political independence and internationalism. In exposing threats to the environment and in working to find solutions, Greenpeace has no permanent allies or enemies. All in all, it will take extremely decades from all parties involved to make this nonprofit organization to solve all the issues that we are facing.
However, convincing all the people of the world how important it will be to prevent the amount of pollution going into the planet to be reduced and finding ways to produce environmentally friendly chemicals and other products will be difficult issues that will have to be agreed on. Greenpeace is willing to admit that getting people to come together and agree on a scale never before seen will be a monumental task, but when we realize how important it is to save our planet and our environment, hopefully we can agree to make some changes. And when we agree to work together, who knows what we can accomplish.
