Difficulties and challenges in life have a way to bring out the worst and the best in people. Some may respond to life’s challenges with indifference; others with depression, anxiety and ever increasing worry; still there are those who take like as it comes and even have the courage to laugh and have joy. These challenges and difficulties lead people to seek faith.

For some, faith reminds them of authority, of dogma and set of rules that must be followed. For others, faith may be likened to a crutch that they use whenever they feel that their strength is not enough to help them stand. Still, with faith may come humor and the desire to love and seek joy. Human faith is mysterious. It seems that the human heart was built to seek joy and until such joy is missing, men and women feel incomplete.

As surprising as it may sound, faith can also lead people to have humor and deal with the challenges of life with a smile and a cheerful disposition. Most people associate faith with solemnity, ritual and dogma that when they encounter humor and laughter, they almost always feel guilty of it. Perhaps the emphasis on sin, repentance and human guilt is much too strong that when humor rears its head, people naturally feel both joy and repulsion for such juxtaposition. Yet, humor is not alien from faith. In fact, it may be through humor that some people find faith. Humor is also good for faith at times, especially for people who are caught with the seriousness of ritual and tradition. By laughing, perhaps a new facet of faith could be discovered and insights shared.

Reflection on Human Faith

Meditation, ritual, rewards and punishment seem to be connected with each other. Most faith and religion also tend to impose religious practices that a follower must adhere to if the favor of deity were to be gained. While other religions may claim that the love of their deity is unconditional, certain practices must be done so as to have peace with the deity. One criticism of people living out their faith, however, is their focus on the other-world, making them care less about the “real world”.

Yet, faith is a mysterious facet of human experience. While scientific proof is scarce, human faith inspires hope and helps people find happiness and joy. In some cases, however, faith tends to bring out seriousness and earnestness from adherents.

Fanatic faith can bring out the worst in people. Due to the perceived superiority of a particular faith, wars have been fought, relationships shattered and confusion ensues. Human history is replete with horror stories about faith and religion and atrocities committed in the name of God. But still, the loftiest and most idealistic achievements have been fostered, developed and nurtured by men and women who sincerely had faith enough to jolt them to action. Faith is mysterious indeed and it is difficult to explain. But human faith is a source of hope and strength even in the midst of all the difficulties and challenges that human life brings.
