Fieldtrip Report

1. 0 INTRODUCTION On Sunday 7 October 2012 I went on field trip to Kundasang Borneo Bird Festival with my course mate accompanied by Miss Juliana Langgat. Bus arrived at Kolej Kediaman Indah Permai about 7. 30am and bus live about 7. 45am. The trip took about 2 hours and we arrived at the bottom of Kinabalu Park about 9. 00am and wait for shuttle bus to go inside Kinabalu Park.

This fieldtrip is one of assessment of Special Event Operation(BE31703) and the purposes of this event is to exposed us how to conduct event and make research about the visitor’s motivation and satisfaction toward Borneo Bird Festival to enhance their quality experiences. 2. 0 DURING THE EVENT We arrived at Kinabalu Park about 9. 30am and the event already starts. There are several booths like Era.

FM KK as official Radio, Borneo Bird Club, Kadaiku souvenir booth, Wild Bird Club of Philiphines, World Wildlife Fund booth, Nikon and canon booth, Mayuri house of art (art booth),Persatuan Seni visual, Borneo book booth, Obon recycling booth, Celcom, Borneo Sun Bear, Tabin Wildlife reserve, Kinabalu Avian Club and other several booth. First when we arrived , the organizer give the entry passport , the entry passport have state all the booth there and we must get the stamp each of the booth, if the entry passport have full with stamp we can redeem the free gift.

I have walk around the booth and have a stamp each of the booth, meantime I also find two respondent to fill up the questionnaire. About 10. 00am there was a talk about shorebirds and why they migrate by Dave Bakewell. With hear about this talk, I have improved my knowledge about bird world. After the talk, we are directed to gather at in front of the Dewan Kinabalu which was the talk are held to have birdwalk guided by the Kinabalu Park guide officer . We are separated by several group with ten people each group and guide by two tour guide. Along the walk inside the park we can see several flower and tree that we didn’t seen before.

The time we have a walk is not the active time of bird so it’s quite hard to see bird is fly around the park. But we have opportunity to see the bird by telescopes and binoculars, and I have seen an endemic bird species in Sabah Borneo named Bornean Falconet its only 15cm also known as the world’s smallest raptor. After walk around for see the bird we have return back to the Kinabalu Park foyer and there are bird sound miming contest are held, participant are required to miming bird sound played, if the sound are quite same, the participant will be the winner.

At the same time we have a round to the booth there such as art painting demo, stone and vase painting, and temporary bird tattoo to take stamp for fill up the passport. Other student are also take this opportunity to have a photo session together. About 12. 30pm we are asked to gather in front of the Dewan Kinabalu to go out of Kinabalu Park to have lunch. About 1. 15pm we arrived at restaurant and had a lunch until 2. 00pm. After that we got over Kundasang market and about 2. 30 the bus leaved to UMS. About 4. 30 pm all student arrived safely at respective hostel. 3. 0 QUESTIONAIRRE ANALYSIS

I have conduct the research by distributed questionnaire to two respondent which are visitor to know their motivation and satisfaction of Borneo Bird Festival. We use lilkert scale from 1 : Strongly disagree to 5 : strongly agree. 3. 1 Part A: Demographic data Both of respondent are female and Brunei ethnicity their age within 31 to 40 years old travel by group tour and origin from Sipitang. They know about this event from banner and travelled there by car. One of the respondent spend about one to two hour and another one spend more than two hours visiting the Bird Borneo Festival location. 3. 2 Part B : Motivation factors

Both visitor agree that they visit Borneo Bird Festival because its organized once a year, its showed that visitor are waiting for the event that organized on a certain time. Both respondents agree that they visit this event because there are tons of activities and there many stalls and exhibition held by organizer. It’s showed those visitors are motivated to join the event if there are variety of activities, stalls and exhibition. Respondents also agree that they visit this event because usually its fun and enjoyable, its indicated that visitor visit event to release their tension and have something new knowledge.

Respondent strongly agree that they visit this event because it held on the weekend, its stated that visitor are motivated to visit the event if that time they are free and day chosen is the important factors to organized an event. One of the respondents agree that they visit the event because the event visited by people all over and another one is conversely. Its show that not all visitor visit the event because of following other it’s also influence by their own intention or other pull factors. Respondents agree that they visit the event because the organizers have expertise in organizing such event.

Its show that visitor motivated to go the event and trust with expertise organizer. One of the respondent slightly disagree she visit the event to discovery different types of people and their behavior and another one strongly agree with that statement. The statement explain that visitor not really care about other while visit the event, in contrast visitor like to observe environmental factors while visit an event. Both respondent agree that they visit the event because there are several activities attract their attention, it is because usually people will join the event if the even or activities are their hobbies or suit with their soul. . 3 Part C : Satisfaction towards the facilities First respondent strongly agree that she satisfied with the existence of the signage and the number provided during the event makes it easy, and another respondent is agree with the statement. Its show that visitor are satisfied with the signage provided. Both respondents are slightly disagree that wording signage are too small and difficult to read. It indicates that the signage to Borneo Bird festival is assisting them to the event. One of the respondent slightly disagree that the number of parking provided are satisfied instead another respondent is strongly agree in that statement.

Its show that organizer not provided enough space for visitor, maybe who come late will don’t have parking place. Both respondents are not satisfied about parking location provided because the location is too far. It’s indicated visitor need comfortable and near parking place for the event. One of the respondents agrees that the number of the accommodation is satisfied and another respondent is slightly disagreeing with the statement. Maybe the number of accommodation nearer are not really meet the demand of visitor during the peak season or if there are event or festive. One of the espondent are strongly agree and another one agree that the location of accommodation is convenient. Both respondents are agreeing that the information center provided brings ease to the crowd but the but not strategically located. Visitors need guidance so the location of information center must be strategic. Both are strongly agreed that the services provided at the information center are superb. The service provided to visitor influence the repeat customer for the future so the service must be gentle and friendly. Both respondents are very satisfied with the number of toilets provided and the cleanliness.

Toilet must be satisfied because it’s one of necessary facility need to concern by organizer to attract more visitors. One of the respondents slightly disagrees with the number of restaurant provided instead another respondent is agreeing with the number restaurant provided. When there is event, the number of restaurant need to enough and variety because visitor for sure will find for food and beverage when they hungry and enjoy the event. Both respondents agree that the service that was served in the restaurant was superb and they satisfied with the level of cleanliness but the menus offered are limited.

The restaurant should vary their menu to give more choice for customer. Both respondents are satisfied with the numbers of rubbish bins provided, the cleanliness around the event location highly related to the rubbish bins provided. Respondents also satisfied with the services provided by volunteer committee in organizing this event, volunteer is required in big event as they will ensure the event location are save and controlled. Both respondents are satisfied with the cleanliness nearby the business premises, cleanliness is important factor to attract visitor and its will encourage repeating visitor in the next event.

One of the respondent not very satisfied with the cleanliness at the event location, its mean the event location not so clean maybe because the event held three days and its one of the factor contribute the mess of the place, organizer need to more concern with the cleanliness along the event held to maintain the good image and name of the organizer. 3. 4 Part D: Satisfaction towards the activities Both respondents are agree that they are satisfied with all the activities rranged, the numbers of staff and volunteers that contribute successfulness of the events , its means organizer success to fitted the activities along the event held with the help of volunteers. Both also satisfied with the involvement of local people in the event, and also indirectly with join this event it’s expose they to multi ethnics in the district. When there is event its will encourage people to socialize with society and it’s enhance unification among local people. Respondents also more agree with statement that they satisfied the activities held attract the crowd and satisfied with the commitment shown by the organizer.

It’s indicated that organizer are able to marker their event with good and make excellent event that that attract attention from the public. Both respondent dissatisfied with delaying activities, organizer need to more concern on the duration each of activities and ensure that no delaying on the activities time to avoid visitor waiting. Both respondent more to agree that is worth spend in the event and satisfied with the days scheduled for the event, the booth and stall open in the event offered good service and product until attract visitor to spend more there.

While the duration of the event give opportunity to people to go there on which day there are free, they not tied to only one day. Overall both respondents agree that they satisfied with Borneo Bird Festival event. 4. 0 CONCLUSION Lastly, with join this event I gained a lot of experience about bird, plants, and know at least about bird species and the history. Besides, I also exposed to how the organizer conduct and organize the event. Every event organized for sure it’s have weaknesses either big problem or small problem.

From joining this event, I observed the visitor still less and not achieve target, maybe the marketing strategies of the organizer not strong enough and they should put more attention in marketing strategies to market this event. Organizer also must count heavily on the facilities provided as its can be one of attractive factor to enhance more visitor. Instead organizer must do postmortem among the staff to know what the problem faced along the vent and also ask feedback from visitor to know weaknesses along the event. With this way organizer can improve the event organize in the future.
