Introduction: 1. 1 Background to the Study: One of the most important services that must be delivered by any tertiary institution is the provision of affordable hostel accommodation and this is the responsibility of the Student Affairs Department in the University. This is a duty of an outstanding importance especially to the new students who, in most cases, are complete ‘strangers’ in the environment. Accommodation is one of the basic needs of a student in tertiary institutions according to Emmanuel Soya (1994).

Therefore, a student in a tertiary institution must be provided with accommodation within the school to enhance his learning. Today in our universities, hostels are not even constructed for students more or less adequately furnished. Hostel accommodations in Nigerian Universities have created a lot of discussions in the field of education. The extent to which hostels accommodation have been scarce, has affected students in different areas of learning to the extent of others even losing their lives.

In this study, we will try to see how this problem of inadequate hostel accommodation has socially and security wise affected the students of Adamawa State University as a case study. The Federal Government of Nigeria recently directed Heads of Tertiary Educational Institutions (TEIs) in the country to hand over hostels in campuses to private managers and also encourage private investors to build hostels for students. 1. 2 Statement of Problem: Housing being one of the basic human needs is an aspect of development economics and therefore of topical interest to all sectors of all societies.

Although it is regarded as an aspect of pupil personnel management in education and thus not directly in the primary assignments of educational administrators with respect to instruction. It is basically true that academic performance must necessarily be influenced by the quality and quantity of the residential accommodation (an aspect of the learning environment) of students. The report on Hostel Accommodation in Nigeria and Adamawa State University to be specific has created a lot of concerns and arguments which motivates me to make research on the issue.

Based on my personal research conducted, some students pointed out some certain constraints facing students in universities concerning hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. Some of these constraints are: inadequate bed space, inadequate rooms and structures, inadequate lockers, inadequate toilets among others. This is why this research attempts to explore ways these problems can be tackled in Adamawa State University and other Institutions. 1. 3 Objectives of the Study:

The main objective of this study is to assess the security and social impact of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. Hence, using the following specific objectives; a. To find out the cause of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. b. To find out the extent to which the schools management prioritize accommodations. c. To examine the conditions of students in and Adamawa State University in relation to inadequate hostel accommodation. d. To find out how inadequate hostel accommodation affects students performance. 1. 4 Significance of the Study:

The outcome of this research will assist the school management under study to carefully view and consider how students are suffering even to the extent to some students falling victims of natural phenomena, either socially or insecurity. Others are been murdered as they reside outside the campus, this is as a result of inadequate hostel accommodation within the school premises. This research will communicate to student staying outside campus to know the risk they are involved in as a result of insecurity outside most especially with the enemies of education rooming everywhere.

Lastly, it would serve as fundamental aid to students and researchers who may wish to go into research of this nature. It will also help students in institutions to know how the school management is concern with the welfare and security of their students. 1. 5 Scope and Limitations of the Study: This research work is based on the security and social impact of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University Mubi from (2007-2012). The difficulties associated with the data collection process are a major limitation of this study is associated with the following; i.

Lack of enough data: Data for this research is not adequate because some of the information’s are kept confidential. Also lack of compliance by some of the respondents is also a deficiency to this research success. ii. Time factor: Time factor which is one of the contributing factors to the unavailability of enough data. The limited time for this study is a major constraint because of the academic work load and departmental courses involved by the researcher. iii. Financial constraint: This is one of the major constraints faced by most researchers.

Most especially, secondary data from the internet sometimes must be paid for before the information is released. Also, some materials are photocopied by the research from the library. 1. 6 Research Questions: The purpose of this study is to provide answers to the following questions; i. Is students staying outside the school because of inadequate hostel accommodation or intentionally? ii. What are the security consequences faced by students staying outside the school campus? iii. How are student affected socially as a result of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University? iv.

How are students learning affected as a result of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University? 1. 7 Methodology: For the purpose of this research, the work is designed to acquire data from primary and secondary sources, which are analyzed and interpreted in order to provide basis for making valid conclusion and recommendations on the of social and security impact of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University Mubi. 1. 8. 1 Sampling: The study employed the use of simple random sampling in selecting respondents. This technique is adopted in order to have fairness in the representative of the population.

This technique is unbiased. 1. 7. 1. 1Sampling Size: For the purpose of this study, 40 respondents were selected from all the staff and students of Adamawa State University Mubi. 1. 8. 2 Instrumentation: The instrument used for data collection for the purpose of this study is the questionnaire which contains both open and close ended method of questions. 1. 8. 3 Administration of Instruments: 40 questionnaires were distributed containing 20 questions. The questionnaires were personally administered to the respondents by the researcher. 1. 8. 4 Rate of Return: 0 questionnaires were distributed to 40 respondents and 35 were returned with well-articulated responses from the respondents. 1. 8. 5 Methods of Data Analysis: Data collected is presented in a table and for the purpose of analyzing the data collected, simple percentage is used. No. of Response x 100 Total No. of response 1. 8 Definition of Terms: In this study, operational terms are used which are unique to the study for clarity purpose. These operational terms include the following; 1. Social: It is the way of living naturally in groups, rather than alone. It is also connected with the society and the way it is organized. . Security: It is an activity which involves protecting a person, country and building against danger or attack. 3. Impact: The powerful effect that something has on somebody or something. 4. Inadequate: It means when something is not enough: not good enough to satisfy a particular need. 5. Accommodation: A place to live, work or stay in. Also somewhere to live or stay, often providing protection and services. 6. University: It is an institution at the highest level of education where you can study for a degree or where you do research. 1. 9. 1 Organization of the Study:

This research work is organized into five chapters with the preliminary pages at the top and references at the end of the work. Chapter one includes fourteen stages in which all the stages try to describe the main aim of the research project. Chapter one also tries to state the method the researcher will use in collecting data and how the data collected is analyzed. Chapter two of this research involves the: Literature review and Theoretical frame work. This chapter tries to use mainly the secondary data collected from the research field which other scholars in the field have contributed to issues of hostel accommodation in Nigeria.

The relevant theories concerning Universities accommodation system are discussed in the chapter two of this research. Chapter three of this research work involves the historical or background of Hostel Accommodation inAdamawa State University Mubi. Chapter four of this project includes the presentation and interpretation of data collected using the method and tools stated above. Chapter five includes the: summary, conclusion and recommendations. Lastly after chapter five is the references which are written using the American Psychological Association Style (APA).
