Luther was taught by some of the harshest monks during his youth which eventually made him become who he has with his literal teachings of scripture. Albert was acquiring money through selling his indulgences. The church at the time allowed the selling of indulgences which was like a get out of jail free card for your sins. In doc A they describe a imagined scene of Pope Julius II not able to enter heaven. He was one of the popes who sold many indulgences and corrupted the church with them at that time as well. Martin Luther adamantly opposed indulgences because he believed only what was in scripture, Believed in only two of the holy seven sacraments, and faith alone will bring salvation.
These beliefs combined with the church at the time led him to write all of his writings, which radically changed the reformation era. Martin Luther was taught as a monk to only believe what scripture preaches. With many years of reading Luther even truly believed that the church was flawed due to the positions and the power the positions hold. Nowhere in scripture was it detailed that there should be a pope let alone have him be above the law and be so powerful. Luther wrote many pamphlets and letters to the pope describing him as the devil himself sometimes and how corrupt he was.
Document E clearly states from the Ninety-fi e thesis that martin Luther wrote, “The pope has neither the will nor the power to remit any penalties beyond those imposed either at his own discretion or by canon law. ” It also stated that, “the pope himself cannot remit guilt, but only declare and confirm that it has been remitted by god, “these quotes describe how he didn’t believe the pope should have the power he did and thought the pope uses it selfishly and unjustly. The church at the time believed in 6 holy sacraments baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy orders, and last rights.
Luther wanted to reform this to be only two baptism and the Eucharist. He thought scripture only described these two and the other five were wrong. Hr wrote to the church many times through his letters and writings these also sparked his writings because when he went to Rome the priest where didn’t fully believe in the Eucharist. Martin Luther said we should literally believe the wine and thy bread are actually turning into Jesus Christ himself where the priest kind of made it look like a stupid part of the catholic religion. One of the most major platforms Martin Luther believed in was faith alone will bring salvation to anyone.
This was almost the complete opposite of what the church believed. To get into heaven with the church you had constantly pay the church and if you supposedly sinned you could buy your way into heaven through indulgences. Luther was completely against it in every way because no scripture supported it and was very unholy. The picture states, “as soon as fold in the basin rings, Right then the soul to heaven springs. ” Doc D shows almost something of a paradox of the time martin Luther trying to tempt Christ.
This picture is the exact opposite of what Martin Luther believed in. The church during the reformation era was one of the most corrupt churches ever. Martin Luther and many other reformists changed the religious landscape of Europe for the better. If Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Knox, Anabaptists, and Mennonites didn’t stand up in what they believed in who knows what the world would be today. Indulgences was one of the most corrupt practices of the church and most likely effected each one of these people or groups to go against the church. Indulgences in general are so utterly unholy and wrong it pushed these reformists to take action.
