Persuasive and Informative Speech Differences and Similarities When giving a speech, or just a conversation, there is a difference between the two. Both types of speech should be supported with the proper information; the information is used in different ways. When speaking to inform, the purpose is try and teach something to the audience. If the audience learns what you wanted to teach them, then you were successful. You need to explain why the information is valuable and useful.

Also important, you want to make sure they understand and retain the essential information. Some examples of informative speech are a teacher telling students about Hurricanes. Someone telling his audience of a town he grew up in. A tour guide telling people about Mount Rushmore. Informative focuses on educating someone about a process, or the way something works and how it developed. For example, how is a glass bottle made? , or how does express mail work? When speaking to persuade, your intent is to influence a person, their attitudes, and even change their beliefs.

If the persuasive argument makes sense, it can persuade the listener to go further, and possibly make changes to their own beliefs. Persuasive speech helps people make a decision. For example, it could be to change their thinking, or the way they perform things. The speech is successful if the audience is willing to make the changes you suggested. Some examples of persuasive speech are a jury being convinced or trying to be convinced by a lawyer.

An example of a famous speech that is both persuasive and informative, on top of being highly inspirational would be the Martin Luther King speech, “I Have a Dream” (Rhetoric,2001). A great speech by this gifted speaker, Martin Luther King demonstrates great oratory skills, great public speaking with the ability to use precise and clear words and text. His speaker responsibilities were of the utmost of ethical standards, no scapegoating, and respected the audience (Gregory, 2009).

Another example of a great speaker that used informative speech would be, Ronal Reagan. His speech was regarding the space shuttle, Challenger (Rhetoric, 2001). He used good oratory skills and great public speaker with the usage of clear text and words. He clearly uses great examples of addressing the audience. Excellent text to persuade and inspire, a natural leader and motivator. He uses power to verbally communicate and illustrate the subject. As a speaker addressing a very important and highly sensitive matter, he was very responsible as a speaker.

There was no stereotyping (exaggeration or distortion) (Gregory, 2009), he used sympathy and compassion with the truth of a horrible tragedy. This is allowing time to put your best foot forward and not so much in mouth.

I still believe face to face communication should be for more serious discussions and leaving the latter for more non serious playful matter. Another fall back to electronic forms of communication is the lack of emotion or misinterpreted one in messages (Longhini, 2011). There is always time for technology and using it for personal and less important matters. As for the old delivery method of a speech and communications, I personally choose the old method. Giving a speech may be daunting, but nothing comes across stronger than face to face and being open, vulnerable yes, but more persuasive I believe.
