The question of smoking in public has emitted varied forms of reactions from a cross section of people. Due to the fact that smoking is not totally prohibited by the law people still have the room to discuss the question of it being allowed in public places. Being a country which contains people from varied race, religion and ethnic backgrounds all of us hold different points of view and belief systems which has shaped how we perceive the issue. This paper aims at exploring the various perspectives through which we can tackle the issue while looking at the pros and cons of allowing public smoking.

In this discussion we have to understand what public means whereby public means places where people come together for any reason that they have set. Ones home is not a public place, a private vehicle is not a public place but in some countries you’re banned from smoking in the vehicle. One might find it strange to consider bar as a public place where smoking is banned as some consider drinking a vice which should be more discouraged than smoking. I would like to put it across that smoking is detested from public place not because it is a vice ‘per say’ but because of the effects it has on the other people present in that place. As some people are allergic to that smoke while all are affected by the cancer causing smoke exhaled by the smoker

Relating from the data collected by the Center for Disease Control during the year 2003 in the United States which estimated that 8.63 million people had developed acute illnesses which were caused by smoking and that smoking has become one of the leading causes of death in the Country. This statistics could have included second hand smokers even though it was not clearly stated. Adding to that, infections of the respiratory tract, cancer and asthma of second hand smokers were found to be caused by the smoke which emanates from the exhaled smoke by smokers, the smoke coming from burning the filter of the cigarette and cigar. Second hand smoke is classified as toxic and a major cause of premature death in both adults and children who are non smokers as it contains chemicals such as vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and benzene. This can be translated to heart disease deaths amounting to 46,000 and cancer of the lungs deaths of 3,400. From the brief discussion in this paragraph we see an arising problem on the way on how to reduce the number of people who get affected daily on the basis of second hand smoking without infringing on the freedom and the enjoyment of those who smoke.

The advocates of public smoking have a point when they say that most of the smoke in public places can be removed by ventilation and fans and that a non smoker has the freedom to choose whether to go to nonsmoking restaurants and bars. Secondly that people don’t choose when to be exposed to smoke or no as many workers are usually exposed to more toxic smoke than that of cigarettes and there has never been a ban on their jobs. It is a fact that the burning of smoking in public places will shrink the profitability of cigarette manufactures and in turn some of the people who are employed will loose their jobs. But for me I see greater good when we approach the issue by weighing the pros and cons of each before coming onto the conclusion onto which side of the divide we should fall into.

In the advocacy for the prohibition of public smoking those who smoke should not see this as prejudice against them. Because others would ask why not prohibit other behaviors that would be considered disgusting such blowing the nose in public sneezing and coughing without covering your mouth. We should understand that behaviors are not prohibited due to someone’s dislike to them but on the instances that the ban will do the greater population more good than harm.

Smoking is good for people as nicotine which occurs in tobacco smoke is good for an individual’s health and has a range of uses in medicine. Banning smoking we should also know that will not eliminate the nicotine consumption which is said to be addictive from the food chain as it is found in tea, tomatoes and chilli. We therefore have to know that we in turn minimize the exposure to the hazardous chemicals which are found in cigarette smoke not just nicotine

Breathing is an inevitable process for any normal human being hence where ever one is they have to constantly breathe. The people who normally smoke have made the choice to smoke while those who happen to be around smoke unconsciously as they breath this is called Passive smoking.

The disturbance of the equilibrium of nicotine in the blood of smokers  by a ban will lead to the reduction in the number cigarettes smoked as they will not be smoking while at work leaving them only to smoke when at home. This will help the addicted people fight addiction as they will have a reason not to smoke during most of their time as most people spend most time in public places, that is work or out of their houses.

Some enjoy the slow dosage of cancer on daily small or huge quantities. By having the right to choose whether to live or die people are left to make the right choices in life but not make that important choice for others. Emphysema and Cancer are both dangerous diseases to die from. The influence one impacts on a young mind is big because at every time an adult acts a child who looks upon him or her as a role model and trusts that every behavior exhibited by the adult is the right one. From a magazine survey conducted found that 82.4% of smokers who took part were found to have started smoking before they attained the age of 19 years. A separate survey by a health magazine reported that most of the regular smokers got into the act before the age of 9years and in 67% of the cases they said that they had witnessed someone else smoking and they thought it was a ‘cool’ idea and got influenced into the act. This shows how much our act impacts on other people hence one should put a lot of thinking before considering the act of public smoking.

In many countries and local government authorities smoking in public have been banned a majority of smokers feel like someone is encroaching into their freedom by those restrictions but if one sees it in this perspective of the addiction brought by drugs and that tobacco is then a drug thereby this restrictions come as a form of relief to the people who have been addicted or are on their way to addiction.

In a situation where smokers are confined and smoke in one place, the component of public smoking does not arise. This definitely shows how all the people with that region on smoking are well aware of their act and therefore rule in such a place do not apply. The advantages of banning smoking in public places have quiet an amount of weight that people should not ignore it or just debate blindly. In the dealing with air pollution and the health of the general public, governmental institutions also get a significant amount of levies from fining people who smoke in public after a ban has been issued. It is very important to note that smoking is also an additive to the rising global temperatures as they increase the carbon footprint of the smokers. Try answering this, roughly what amount of carbon dioxide do you think all world smokers emit in one day? Hence with a ban in public smoking there will be a significant reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide and other dangerous gases.

In support of the ban on public smoking the country and every single individual stands to gain and we can achieve a lot by the move as I will depict in my writing. The society needs to reestablish the moral status, the ethical standards need to be redefined, we need to redesign how we educate and mould our children in the promise of creating strong foundations based on sound decisions and examples laid by the adults in the society.

Cancer has risen to be a major killer accounting to a figure of nearly 29% of cancer deaths each year. There are various types of cancers but for the sake of this paper we are going to concentrate on lung cancer caused by smoking. Cancer is a terminal disease which not only affects the sufferer but also the close people surrounding him or her. In the event of death of a parent the family members left behind are left without a bread winner this causes the injection of poverty in the family setup. How much can the countries’ health care sector save with the reduction in the rate of smoking only by just a fraction? The answer is millions. This will be saved from the reduced cancer management cases which consume a large number of the tax payers’ money. The advantage will also reflect in other sectors of the economy as the saved money will be redirected in the development of other sectors of the economy such as better education system.

With the implementation of a ban cigarette smoking is poised to reduce with a significant number. The amount which a family setup uses per day to sustain the habit will be significantly cut down. The resulting savings can be used in uplifting the families’ financial position in the society through the means of investments which pay up by increasing these families financial base, thus can act as a catalyst for poverty reduction.

Every day a child goes without food somewhere in the world, another child sleeps out in the cold and another without any cloth on his or her body. Saving ten sticks of cigarettes a day can help save the life of another. In the event we view the ban o public smoking as an infringement on our freedom as smokers why don’t we view it in another perspective, such as saving a smoke that could have caused harm to ourselves for a better mission, charity. One said there is no difference between a suicide and a smoker only that one does is at a slow pace. Instead of branding ourselves that bad name why don’t some one rise up for a just endeavor to humanity.

The country looses millions on daily basis due to the effects of smoking on individuals. For each smoke a person puffs some amount of his or her physical ability goes with it as the tar in the smoke damages the lung reducing its ability to work effectively hence the persons job delivery diminishes slowly in turn incapacitating him or her. This leads to the loss of a lot of man power needed to take the country to the next level hence as a country we should unite against what damages the fabric of our society.

Due to the fact that some people detest smoking as a person one should have the heart to do to others what we would like them to do onto us. This is important in creating harmony in the society as people will create mutual respect in the community. On the pother hand what smoking has to be based upon is its impact on the immediate neighbor. An individual’s privacy or environment once disturbed by the impact of another person smoking is among a cause as to why this should not be tolerated in public. In the contemporary society, though the numbers of smokers has been on the increase, it does not guarantee a chance that they have to definitely smoke in public. This is due to the fact that out of the few smokers that can be available at a place, the rest are not and in this case they are usually affected by this.
