You have asked me to tell you what I think it takes to make a successful Catholic colony in the “new world”. As you may know, there are many challenges and difficulties in making a successful colony but I hope the knowledge I will give more into this letter will help you. As you may have known, I have witnessed the growth and explored most of all the colonies in the so called “new world”, like the Spanish, Dutch, French, and also the English. So if you have any distrust, please, don’t.

Let me first start off with this, the Spanish have had great success in making profit in the new world, but not in making colonies. There “iron fist” to force convert Indians into Catholic’s was not such a great idea, they had many wars and losses and lots of hate. Dividing there colonies. They have had great trade, which is key in making a good profit colony but, used a lot of forceful actions which isn’t good. Forced labor and forced conversion isn’t the way to go, so make sure your colonists don’t do it.

Unlike the forceful Spanish with your constant conquering, the French had a different approach, they did not use an “iron fist” to force convert the Indians. They traded with the ideas which is also good in making a profit, but don’t trade guns with Indians, because it will cause may Indians wars which is also not very good, even if its unintentionally like the French, they also did not force convert like the Spanish which was good. They had an okay colony but not great like the one I hope you will have.

The Dutch also had a same approach as the French, no forceful conversion like the Spanish, but do not make alliances, I know it sounds good, but for the sake of your colony, just don’t. The Dutch did but they killed many Indians which is not so good, trust me. You will have a lot of enemies and you know that isn’t good. The Dutch were weird people if I do say they had many myths and stories which were entertaining but, just plain weird, they partied a lot and just were really stupid. Make sure your colony isn’t as rowdy as the Dutch if you want it to be Catholic.

The Virginia Company especially did terrible at making a colony, make sure you have experniced people going to make a new colony, unlike them. A person eating each other isn’t so good, don’t you think? The colony of the Virginia company didn’t know how to hunt or survive earlier which caused there cannibalism, kicking out Indians to which was bad, because there were really just stupid. They made profit later but just starting out, they did really terrible if I do say so. Experniced people are also a key in having a good colony, not just rich people doing nothing like the Virginia Company did.

The superficial Puritan Plymouth trying to create a colony did not know how to survive, because they were just stupid religious people trying to leave England. They relied mostly on the Indians at first for mostly everything they had been because of the Indians that lived by them too. But they did make their own government and charter which was good to have in a colony and is also a great key but the people were just weird, they did not force convert and if they tried they probably would have just died. They had some had some good ideas but also many not, bye.

The Massachusetts Bay Colonies also did a poor job at an idea of a good colony or so I heard a “City on a Hill”. First off make sure your colony called Maryland has all the same beliefs, which is Catholic if you try to have forceful rules that are racial like the Bay colonies did because if you don’t your colony will be divided because you will have Catholics and non Catholics which is really bad. You don’t want your colony in two, right? The Bay Colonies did a really horrible job and don’t do what they did.

In the end, the Spanish, French, Dutch Virginia Company, and finally Plymouth and Bay Colonies, had some good ideas, but really, not some great ideas too. We want your colony at the top, and not like these. We want you making good profit and good trade too. You need a government as well with laws and rules. Non forceful conversion and non violence acts. Experienced labors, workers, builders and also farmers. This will make a successful colony, trust me Lord Calvert it will, please do. I wish you good luck in making this “Maryland” colony. From Thomas Rolfe
