William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet has an important message for readers of all ages. The thematic message that the author is showing to the reader is that love at first sight is true love that is a terrifying experience for those in love. A character that shows experience of terrifying love is Romeo. One of Romeo’s experiences is when he was exiled from Verona for killing Tybalt, just an hour after he was married to Juliet.

After this, the Prince said “And for that offense immediately we do exile him hence” (III. ii. 202-203). the reason why Romeo being exiled is a terrifying experience in true love is that Romeo & Juliet just got married and not even an hour later they are not to see each other ever again. This is upsetting for Romeo that fate got in the way and caused him to never see Juliet again. The other experience that Romeo occurred with was when his new wife Juliet killed herself not knowing that she took a potion to put her in a 42 hour coma. Romeo then learned of this from his servant Balthazar. Then she is well and noting can be ill. Her body sleeps in Capel’s monument and her immortal part with angels lives” (V. i. 18-20). The reason that this shows a terrifying experience of true love is that Romeo finding out of his wife’s death had died. Not knowing that she took a potion to put her in a coma. This all happened because he never got the letters from Friar Lawrence telling him of the plan. Romeo having so many dreadful love experiences is only half of the story. Let us see Juliet’s experience’s. Seeing that Romeo had some experiences let us see where his wife stands in this equation of true love.

Seeing that Romeo had some experiences, let us see where his wife Juliet stands in this situation of true loves terrifying experience. One of Juliet’s experiences is when Romeo was exiled from Verona. As she cries for her husband’s banishment her father, Lord Capulet, is making her marry Paris. “Delay this marriage a month, a week, or if you do not, make the bridal bed in that dim monument where Tybalt lies” (III. v. 227-229). The reason Juliet marring Paris is a terrifying experience is that she would be cheating on her husband Romeo.

The other experience that Juliet had was when she awoke from her 42 hour coma potion and found Romeo lying right next to her dead from the illegal poison that he had consumed. “O churl! Drunk all, and left no friendly drop to help me after? I will kiss thy lips. Haply some poison yet doth hang on them to make me die with a restorative” (V. iii. 175-179). The reason this shows true love at first sight true love is that when she woke up, Romeo is dying, or dead, right beside her and the only thing that’s she is thinking about in her mind is killing herself to be with Romeo forever.

So that no one can keep them apart and stand in there loves way. Juliet having to watch her Romeo die right in front of her shocked her so badly that she stabbed herself to be him forever with no one in their way, or her father making her marry another man not knowing that she has already been married. Romeo & Juliet have shown that love at first sight can be true love. Romeo & Juliet killed themselves because their parents would not allow them to be together. The message that Romeo & Juliet have given to readers is that love at first sight can be true love but can have some surprising terrifying experiences hidden behind it.
