Roy Lichtenstein’s most famous piece is “Drowning Girl” made in 1963 and is a comic style picture. This style of art started in the early 60’s. It was a big year in Pop Art. Advertising was using some of the elements in modern art. One example of this was the Campbell’s Soup Can. Bright primary colours were mainly the only colours used in Pop Culture at the time. The image “Drowning Girl” is thought to be about a girl who doesn’t care about living anymore. She is isolated and is surrounded in a pool of water. She quotes “I don’t care!

I’d rather sink than call Brad for help! ”. The main art elements in this piece are Colour, Texture, Line, Shape and Tone. The colour is important because it consists of very basic and faded colours like blue, black, cream and pink. Having faded colours make the picture look simple and easy to look at and understand. Texture is another important part because when blown up to a large size, you can see that it is actually made on lots of tiny dots like most comics in those days were. The movement of the water is a main element in the line category.

The water around the girl makes it easier to see that she is being dragged into the water. Shape and tone are important because the picture is not 3D and it is ‘cartoony’. Judith Beheading Holofernes, Caravaggio Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was an Italian Baroque style artist. He was born on 29th of September, 1571 and grew up in Milan, Italy. His family moved to Caravaggio to escape the plague which ravaged Milan in the early years of his childhood. Leonardo da Vinci was a big inspiration in Caravaggio’s art work.

He was famous for his intense contrasting and naturalism of his paintings. “Judith Beheading Holofernes” was painted in 1598-99 and is a Baroque piece of art. This style of art was very common in those days as was religious artwork. This painting is thought to be about a woman by the name of Judith gets Holofernes (who was the Assyrian General) drunk then seizes his sword and decapitates him. Judith is accompanied by her maid stands to the right. The emotions of the three people are very different. Judith in particular has a mix of determination and repulsion in her expression.

The main art elements in this image are Tone, Colour and Form. Tone is important because the painting is highly contrasted and has very dramatic lighting, shadows and highlights. All of Caravaggio’s artwork consisted of these elements. It’s very dramatic in this image because it makes the lighting intense. The colour in this painting is very dark. It consists of black, brown, red and white. Having these colours make it very powerful in terms of depth. The study of the human figure is very detailed in this picture.

The faces appear to be three dimensional and the shadows contribute to that feeling. These artworks are similar because they are both very dramatic. Another similarity is they are both scenes from a story. These artworks are different because they are two very different styles of art. The most obvious one being one is Pop Art and the other is Baroque. The pop art is light whilst the Baroque is very dark. Another difference is one is close up on the face whilst the other is a figure. One of the artwork is a flat shape while the other is a three dimensional form.
