The Minotaurs proper name was Asterion, “the starry one,”gifted to him by Pasiphae “All Shining”, the immortal daughter of sun-god Helios. She was at the time married to King Minos of Crete; the Cretan bull was sent froth from the sea by Poseidon to be sacrificed, but when Minos did not, Poseidon was angered and caused Pasiphae to be cursed with the desire to couple with it while hidden inside a wooden cow crafted by the artificer Daidalos.
