Actually, they did have a form of one. The ancient Chinese had a iron clad ship that had metal plates linked together over a wooden frame that had a dragon head with an open mouth on the mast head. When in a battle they could shoot flames out of the mouth or a poison gas. It is really remarkable and deadly to the people that they were against. They had to be really close to the other ship for this to work and the conditions to be correct, but the fact they could do it is interesting.
