Augustus was able to persuade the senate that he was the right choice as a leader for Rome, whilst trying to defeat M.Antony. The Senate were mostly against him at the battle of Actium, but after that victory it all changed. The Senate started to agree with all that he did, and eve when Augustus offered to hand in some of his powers, he ended up receiving more! lets just say he was a very intellectual leader of Rome, he knew what that consequences of all of his actions would be, (he was very calculating in that way). this any many other reasons where why he was considered clever. He was able to do all this and become an Emperor right after his ‘father’ (J.Ceasar) was assassinated for trying to do the very same thing! Augustus knew the importance of propaganda in many forms, eg. art, poems, etc… he also created many reforms, social and religious, for the good of Rome, it also made it much easier for him to rule over the other provinces knowing Rome was more secure. he had many victories in battle as well. these are only a few short reasons as to why Augustus was considered ‘clever’.
