There are very few good remains of scuta as they were made of wood and leather which deteriorated over time. However what the history people have pieced together is that a scutum was a large rectangular piece of equipment. Depending on the times, it could have a slight curve to protect the body a little better. A relatively well preserved one was found at Dura Europa and it was 3 feet 3 inches long, 2 feet 8 inches wide and 2 inches thick. Adding in its iron boss and bronze edging it weighed about 12 lbs. Some had reinforced centers which added another 4 1/2 lbs to the total weight.
