The uprising was put down, but the interference of cities outsidethe Empire – Eretria and Athens – turned Persian attention to themand led to the 490 BCE punitive expedition against them, turnedback at the battle of Marathon.

This led to the major Persian invasion of mainland Greece in 480BCE and continued sporadic warfare which lasted until a peace wasdeclared in 449 BCE.
