The problem with Assyrian nationalism is that while there areenough Assyrians in the world to have a country (2.5-3 million ofworldwide) there is no place in the world with an Assyrianmajority. So, there are two possibilities about how to do this: (1)do something similar to what the Jews did in gathering a largeDiaspora into one place where we would become a majority and pushfor independence on that tract of land – hopefully without anequivalent Nakba or (2) push for a power-sharing agreement withanother ethnic group in that region similar to the LebaneseConfessionalist system. And either solution can be realized withstrong autonomy (like Iraqi Kurdistan of today) or trueindependence.

Unfortunately, the Assyrian community does not have the financialor military strength currently to assert independence, making it along way off. The smartest tack for the Assyrian community to takeis to support option (2) and there are proposals for an Assyrianautonomous province in Iraq. Assyrians should strongly advocate forthe passage of this sort of partial autonomy as a momentary measureto protect the Assyrian people and for the possible long-termfuture of statehood.
