A meta-search engine submits your query to several other search engines and returns a summary of the results back to you. Using a meta-search engine allows you a broader scope the results you get back are not always better than when you use a single search engine. Search engines frequently have different ways they expect the requests to be submitted; some allow the word AND to be used while others require a + and some only require a space to combine the words. Using meta-search engines not only save a student time, but it also is a more effective way to search the web to get the information a student is trying to search; it is a tool that sends your query to several search engines to create a list from all its sources.

A Boolean operator defines the relationships between words or groups of words to ensure that a search containing different operators performs as you intend, us parentheses. The results may be different depending on how the Boolean operator AND is used with the Keyword Field. The Keyword Field automatically searches the Abstract, Descriptor, and Title fields’ altogether. If you are trying to search up stuff about jazz or blues music you would search jazz or blues to find articles that discuss either jazz or blues, OR always broadens your search.

When you search up jazz and blues the search finds articles that compare jazz and blues, AND always narrows a search than what OR does. If you search jazz not blues the search finds articles that are exclusively about jazz, NOT always excludes record with the specified term. With Boolean operators you should be extra careful with using NOT because it eliminates all catalog records that contain the term that comes after NOT, but can be useful when the search word has clusters in computing it also allows you to tighten up on your search by using NOT or AND NOT.
