In the movie The Dark Knight Rises, lots of typology of architecture was featured. The underground architecture -such as the sewage were Bane and his followers hid from the Police in the beginning of The Dark Knight Rises and the famous cave under the Wayne palace were Bruce (Batman) hid his Batman costume, weapons and means of transportation (car, motorcycle and plane)-played an important role in the movie. Also in the movie, there was architecture from different eras. For example the Wayne palace was built in the 1800’s as mentioned in the first movie Batman Begins.

It was destroyed at the end of the movie and rebuilt in The Dark Knight Rises. Since the Wayne palace was destroyed in the first movie, in The Dark Knight Bruce Wayne lived in an apartment in a skyscraper that viewed the modern architecture and design. In The Dark Knight Rises, the architecture in Gotham city was featured in opposite ways before the revolution, in the time of Harvey Dent, and after the revolution that was led by Bane. Harvey Dent was a symbol of justice in Gotham city. He was featured in The Dark Knight.

He was a lawyer who made the “Dent Act” which is a law that helps imprison almost all of Gotham’s criminals. In his time and after the Dent Act and how the act “cleaned up the streets of Gotham”, Gotham city was seen as a symbol of justice where the criminals were jailed and the “organized crimes” were demolished. After the death of Harvey Dent the city remained “clean” until 8 years later with the appearance of Bane that took over the city. After the revolution of Bane, the city was seen as a symbol of corruption.

It is very obvious the difference between Dent’s time and Bane’s time in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. In The Dark Knight (Dent’s time), the city was somehow normal in comparison to The Dark Knight Rises (Bane’s time) where the city was ghost-like. The bridges connecting Gotham with the city were all destroyed, the streets are full of tanks and no people walking in the street. In The Dark Knight, the police used the Dent Act to control the city and imprison most of the criminals of Gotham.

The police had the city under-control while the criminals where jailed. When Bane first appears in The Dark Knight Rises, he hides out of the sight of the police in the sewage. When Bane tricks the police into going after him into the sewage to find and arrest him, Bane blows up all the entrances and exits of the sewage trapping the police inside. That way the situation changed, instead of Bane hiding in the sewage from the police, the police is trapped in the sewage and Bane ruled Gotham.

After Bane’s people takes over the city, the buildings that symbolized justice or anything close to that was changed into the source of corruption. From example one of the most noticed places was the courthouse. At first, when the Dent Act was first applied and the 8 years after it, the courthouse symbolized justice for the people of Gotham and fear for the criminals. But after Bane took over Gotham city, the courthouse was a place foe the criminals to judge “good guys”. For example in The Dark Knight Rises when commissioner Gordon and his few left men were brought into court and Scarecrow (Dr.

Jonathan Crane, was imprisoned at the end of Batman Begins) gave Gordon the choice of being sentenced to death or exile. And when Gordon chose death, Scarecrow sentenced them to “death by exile”. That showed how corrupt the courthouse became after Bane took over. Not only was the courthouse was obviously changed before and after Bane, also the department of the Applied Sciences in the Wayne Enterprises. In the beginning, this department was invisible. It technically didn’t exist.

Lucius Fox (CEO of Wayne Enterprises) hid it from the public so that the weapons wouldn’t be in danger of being stolen but that didn’t work out so well because as soon as Bane took over, he found and the department stole the weapons and also used them against Gotham city. In conclusion, Gotham city experienced a huge difference between the time of Harvey Dent and the time of Bane. The time of Dent was a time were the police rules the streets of Gotham city, as they should. While when Bane took over the city, he destroyed it with its symbols of justice and replaced them with corruption.
