They speeded up the movement of troops to the front and the transport of supplies to soldiers at the from or in garrisons. These Roads constituted 20% of the enormous road network of roads built around the Roman Empire. Therefore, the more general purpose of road building was to make communication and transport easier and to facilitate trade. The Romans also built bridges with the use or arches. They could cross wider rivers and valleys, therefore contributing to the communication network. They also built ports to facilitate shipping. The Romans also built aqueducts to bring fresh water from the sources on the mountains to the towns. They also built sewers, outdoors public toilets and public baths. The aim was to improve sanitation.
