The Roman army was so successful with their training because theyused a three pronged approach to training and motivation. It goeswithout saying that the army was healthy and physically fit (atleast in its heyday). They were trained in the use of weapons andartillery and honed both their physical conditioning and weaponsskills daily. Physical discipline was liberally used, adding to themotivation for the men to “get it right”. The Romans also werepossibly the first to use psychological motivation. The addressesor “pep talks” given by the commanders before battles are ones ofRoman superiority and the enemy’s weakness.
