Sparta was consumed with internal problems with its restive serfpopulation. Athens hat turned the anti-Persian league into anempire of its own, living high on the hog with the funds it mulctedfrom it. Athens became overconfident and aggressive, and Sparta waspushed reluctantly by the Peloponnesian League, which it led, intotrying to push Athens to back off. Athens persisted and thedestructive 27-year Peloponnesian War ensued.
