In 499 BCE the Greek cities within the Persian Empire revolted.Athens and Eretria sent an expedition to help the cities, and inthe process over-reached themselves by burnig the Persianprovincial capital of Sardis. Persia mounted a punitive expeditionin 490 BCE aganst them, capturing Eretria but turned back atMarathon by Athens.
