Jewish tradition states that Judaism was fully formed during thelifetime of Abraham. Any later developments were the result of newcircumstances, not new religious fundamentals, which cannot change.Take, for example, the case of electricity. When it entered thescene in the 1800s, the Torah-authorities of the time applied thebasic principles of Judaism to the new question in order to formthe relevant halakha-rulings, without changing the principlesthemselves.
So, for instance, the community began using the names of the monthsprevalent in the Babylonian language (Jerusalem Talmud, RoshHashanah 1:2), but the Jewish calendar itself, meaning thefestivals, and the number and system of months, stayed as it hadalways been.
