The original attempt to build the Parthenon in 490 BCE failed toget off the ground. The temples on the Acropolis were demolished in480 BCE by the Persians in retaliation for the Atheniansdemolishing the temples in the Persian provincial capital at Sardisin 498 BCE.With part of the profits of the empire which Athens createdafter the Persian invasion was turned back, the general andpolitical leader Pericles financed the temple built for the goddessAthena 447 to 432 BCE.
