The whole Athenian army of 9,000 ran back to Athens after defeating the Persian infantry. They realised that the Persian cavalry was being rowed around to attack Athens in their absence, and ran back over the hills to form up in front of the city just as the cavalry disembarked; the Persians went home disappointed. Not a bad performance in armour and weapons after already fighting a battle at Marathon. Today’s marathon runners get it easy.

Ther is a story that Pheidippes brought the message. He was sent to Sparta to summon them to the battle. He ran the 120 mile round trip and came back hallucinating and died. He was therefore not available to carry any other messages.
