Rome’s location in the Mediterranean meant that the imperial expansions first occurred in the Mediterranean. Rome took over most of the lands of the Mediterranean before she expanded inland into Europe. Egypt was the only land on the Mediterranean which came under Roman control after an expansion into inland Europe (the conquest of Gaul). Eventually, Rome annexed all the lands around this sea.Rome is in Italy. Italy had the geographic advantage of being between the western and the eastern basins of the Mediterranean. The Romans could look towards both the west and the east and their central position in this sea helped to control with vast sea.
