Yes. One reason was that the laws were different depending on how wealthy you were. If you were wealthy, your punishment wasn’t as bad as if a poor man did it. Another reason is that many punishments were way to harsh for the crime. For example is you messed up a haircut your hands were cut off! So people probably didn’t live a very pleasant life!
