Constantine certainly began his career as a pagan, and it is uncertain to what extent he may have embraced Christianity as a personal faith. Scholars say that he had a very unsophisticated understanding of what being a Christian actually meant.

All emperors who followed Constantine were Christians, except Julian the Apostate (361-363) who was a pagan. After a very short reign, Julian was killed in battle and the army chose a Christian as his successor, on the basis of perceived merit rather than religion.
