Nineveh was an ancient Assyrian city on theeastern bank of the Tigris River, and capital of the Neo-AssyrianEmpire. It was the largest city in the world for some fifty yearsuntil it was sacked by an unusual coalition of Medes, Persians,Babylonians, Scythians and Cimmerians in 612 BC. Its ruins areacross the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, in theNinawa Governorate of Iraq.
