There were dozens of battles. The decisive ones were:Lade (sea) 494 BCE – co-ordinated resistance bythe eastern Greek cities crushed.Marathon (land) 490 BCE – a Persian punitiveexpedition against Athens and Eretria turned back, causing thePersians to plan the suppression of all mainland Greece.Artemesion (sea) 480 BCE – Persia defeated theGreek fleet, allowing its army to advance through the Thermopylaepass into southern Greece and bring central Greek city armies toits side.Salamis (sea) 480 BCE – southern Greek fleetdefeated the Persian fleet removing the amphibious threat to thesouthern Greek cities.Plataea (land) 479 BCE – with the amphibiousthreat gone, southern Greek cities armies combined to defeat thePersian army and its central Greek allies.Mycale (sea-land) 479 BCE – as the Persian army was beingdefeated the Greek navies defeated the remaining Persian fleetholed up on the Asia Minor coast, ending the Persian seathreat.Eurymedon (sea-land) 466 BCE – the DelianLeague led by Athens destroyed the Persian fleet and army insouthern Asia Minor, leaving Persia on the defensive avoidingbattle.Prosopitis (land) 455 BCE – a five yearexpedition to Egypt led by Athens was wiped out by Persia when ittrapped them in the Nile delta marshes.Salami-in-Cyprus (sea-land) 451 BCE – a DelianLeague siege was terminated after the death of the Atheniancommander Cimon and fought to extricate itself, successfullydefeating the Persian navy and army.Peace was subsequently negotiated ending the wars which lasted499 to 449 BCE.
