Not only was there peace but there was also tremendous growth. The Roman Empire greatly expanded. It spread in such places as Western Asia, Northern Africa and parts of Europe. Growth also happened within the empire. Many public works such as monuments, roads and bridges were created during this time. In addition great buildings were built. One such building was the Coliseum. At the Coliseum, circuses were held. These were not quite the circuses that happen in modern days. These circuses held chariot races and gladiator fights. Gladiators were specially trained slaves who fought each other or even animals in bloody battles. Many of these battles often ended in the death of the gladiator.
