Persia sent an expeditionary force to capture Athens and Eretria for interfering in Asia Minor and in the process burning down their provincial capital Sardis. The idea was to reestablish the expelled Athenian tyrant Hippias to keep the city under control.

Eretria was captured by treachery within. The persians moved on to Attica, landig at the plain of Marathon. The Athenian army established itself on the hills around it to avoid the Persian cavalry, and awaited the arrival of the Spartan infantry. When the Persian cavalry was being loaded in ships, the Athenian force took the opportunity and ran down and defeated the inferior Persian infantry caught without its cavalry protection.

The Persian force went home.
