Hammurabi was aFirst Dynasty king of the city-state of Babylon, and inherited thepower from his father, Sin-Muballit, in c. 1792 BCE. Babylon wasone of the many ancient city-states that dotted the Mesopotamianplain and waged war on each other for control of fertileagricultural land. Hammurabi extended his empire northward from thePersian Gulf through the Tigris and Euphrates river valleys andwestward to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea as king ofBabylonia, and the greatest ruler in the first Babylonian dynasty.Hammurabi is primarily remembered for his codification of the lawsgoverning Babylonian life.
