At the same timethat Babylon was raising to greatness in southern Mesopotamia, inNorthern Mesopotamia another group was growing strong. TheAssyrians were a much more warlike people than the Babylonians.They were also known as great traders. Their caravans traveled allover the place, bringing goods to trade as well as food and wine tovarious cities in Mesopotamia. The Assyrians did not create smallstatues like the Sumerians or Babylonians. Instead the Assyrianspainted on ceramics. Most of their paintings dealt with battles andthe life of a warrior. We have learned a lot about how theAssyrians went to battle and how soldiers lived through theirpaintings. The Assyrians lived in towns. Even though they wereherders and goat traders, they also had places to settle when theygrew tired of the nomadic life. In their towns, they sometimesbuilt huge buildings. We are not sure what these buildings were forbut they were decorated with demons.
