Although the intention to anoint Jesus’ body with spices explains the presence of the women at the tomb, some scholars have expressed surprise that they would do so. The gospels make it clear that Jesus had already been anointed and wrapped in a linen cloth, so that there was no reason to disturb the body afterwards. And they would certainly have been aware that a massive stone had been placed across the entry to the tomb, making it impossible for them to gain entry unless they (or the author) knew that the stone would be moved for them.
