The destruction of Carthage was the result of the third and final Punic war. However the term “destruction” should be taken in a wide sense, as the city itself was huge and the Romans would certainly not spend their time and resources actually destroying it. Rather, they enslaved many of the people, put to death the leaders of the revolt , imposed monetary penalties, and scattered salt around the gates and walls of the city as a symbol of Carthage’s destruction.
