The final result of the Punic Wars was to create a Roman empire while Rome was still a republic. With Carthage reduced to shambles, ancient Rome took possession of the Western Mediterranean Sea, its various islands, and the Iberian peninsula. Rome also created colonies in North Africa that once had been part of Carthage’s commercial empire. Rome also had taken possession of Sicily and had to build a naval fleet to battle with the fleet that Carthage had.
