The Battle of Marathon was an exceptional achievement for theGreeks over the numerically superior Persians. Pheidippides wassent to inform Athens of this signal victory. This requiredcrossing a distance of approximately 25 miles – the approximatedistance from Marathon to Athens. He ran without stopping, gaspedout his news Victory! (Nike! in Greek) and died of exhaustion.
To celebrate this victory and the feat of Pheidippides the Marathonrace was run annually and is now synonymous with a greatachievement .
The modern Marathon Race eventually became fixed at 26 miles 385yards in length .
