At the time of Cyrus, the Hebrew aristocracy was exiled in Babylonand the ordinary people in Israel and Judaah were living underforeign aristocracies imported to keep them quiet. King Cyrus isalleged to have allowed some of this exiled aristocracy to returnto Jerusalem to try to re-establish itself there. They brought withthem a mix of Hebrew and Babylonian culture and religion whichformed the basis of modern Judaism.
