The potential loot attracted a mass of carpetbaggers who swooped onit’s defeated provinces. It also provided employment for themanpower of impoverished peninsular Greece in the armies maintainedby the Hellenistic states which the Persian Empire was broken upinto when Alexander died. Greece became progressively depopulatedwith this flow of it’s people to Asia and North Africa over thenext three centuries.
