They were competitors for superiority in the Western Mediterraneanarea. After winning each of the first two Punic Wars, Rome imposedheavy penalties on the Carthaginians, but the latter were suchsuccessful traders they bounced back. Rome decided to end them forgood and after winning the 3rd Punic War, destroyed the city andsold the surviving population into slavery.
