Civilisation arises where there is a surplus of produce whichallows a society to go beyond a daily struggle for survival food tobeing able to use the surplus for other purposes. Phoenician tradearound the Mediterranean promoted prosperity and hence theadvancement of civilisation. This trade, in an era beforemechanised transport, depended on sea transport. Wagons were tooslow and limited in carrying capacity. The Phoenicians developed atrading fleet, and a war fleet to protect it, which enabled thetrade to expand and prosper, and so allow the prosperity of otherareas to advance.
