It’s really hard to say exactly when Ancient Rome fell, but the traditional date is 476 AD. It was in August of that year when when the troops of Orestes, who had previously led a rebellion against emperor Julius Nepos, rebelled, murdered Orestes, and crowned their leader Odovacer, king of Rome. The son of Orestes, Romulus Augustus, was 16 when his father made him emperor. He didn’t last long in the position, but he retired and lived till much later. Do you see how it’s hard to say? Rome fell in 476, but it was left with another king. The decline of Rome had been occurring for quite some time before this happened and its fall was inevitable by this point. This makes it also correct to say it fell in 410. In 476, Rome was ruled by Germanic kings, and though Roman customs were preserved, the Empire was gone and would never return.
