The Phoenicians were successful, because since the lebanese mountains were a natural barrier, they looked to the sea to expand. The Phoenicians founded colonies on several islands, because those are easiest to protect. Also, the colonies proved useful to stock goods, and to escape to in time of war. The Phoenicians are believed to have invented the bireme, and the trireme, which means two sets of oars, and three sets of oars. Because their ships were vulnerable to storm, they sailed in March-October when it was hottest. SOme say that the Phoenicians sailed as far as ENgland in search of tin, but I think that that’s unlikely. It is recored however, that Spain was a major trading partner.
