Some likely candidates for man’s discovery of how to control fire rely upon discovery, then exploitation, control, and ultimately the ability to produce it at will.

Discovery: Lightening, spontaneous combustion of organic heaps, volcanoes all provide abundant sites for man’s first encounters with fire itself.

Exploitation: A forest fire of whatever origin would provide a delicious and nutritious source of food for the whole tribe! Bambi’s mother may have helped.

Control: Once fire is obtained, simply by transferring burning material to a new source of fuel allows a clan or family to benefit from this new resource for the benefit of the whole family.

Generation of Fire at Will: It took me a bit of time to figure how this might have occurred.
Jewellery! Shells, bones, antlers hall been found in association with fire-capable societies. These artifacts required bow drills to make the holes. Drills… friction… heat… fire!

This a a plausible route to man made fire at his own hand.
