Maroo is a girl in her dad (Areg)’s tribe, he dies in the middle of the story when he and his brother, Vorka, are hunting for ibex. Vorka breaks his arm trying to kill an ibex. Maroo has to save her family/clan (grandmother (Old Mother), Mom (Tikek), little sister (Nimai), and her uncle (Vorka)) from starvation while her brother (Otak) and her go over a glacier, a mountain, and the pass of the spirits to get to the Autumn Grounds and bring back help. One day Maroo can’t find Otak and their dog Rivo so she has to go on alone. At the end of the book, Otak and Rivo return and everyone is safe.Maroo of the Winter Caves, by Ann Turnbull, is an epic survival novel set during the last Ice Age in Europe. A young girl, Maroo, and her family become trapped in a blizzard on the Great Plain. With limited food and supplies, Maroo and her family of nomadic hunters face starvation. The family’s only choice is to send two children, Maroo and her younger brother, over the dangerous mountain pass that leads to another camp. In order to survive the pass, Maroo and her brother have to cross glaciers, climb steep mountains, and face the spirits of the mountains. At one point, Maroo is faced with making the decision of whether to continue her journey alone, or to search for her lost brother. In the end, Maroo makes it through the mountains and brings rescuers to save the family back on the other side of the mountain.
