Syria on the other hand is the English name for Souria which is believed to come from Aramaic meaning the highland. This is the land plateau representing the Easter side of the Mediterranean Sea.

Present day Syria came to exist in its current border following the Sykes-Picot Treaty signed between the victorious British and the French after WWI, where that area was divided into two parts under British and French mandate, and each area was in turn divided into two independent states, representing Syria and Lebanon under France,and Jordan and Israel/Palestine under Britain.
